Facility Tours

The Port offers guided bus tours of its marine facilities to community, educational and business groups with a specific interest in marine trade, as time and staffing permits.

Unfortunately, we do not offer tours to individuals or young children. Most marine tours last from 2-3 hours. We also offer limited tours of Portland International Airport (PDX) and our business parks. Due to federal security law and safety issues, access is restricted at the marine terminals and beyond the security checkpoints at PDX.

Speakers Program

Since 1891, the Port of Portland has played a vital role in creating and maintaining connections from Pacific Northwest to the world beyond. Whether by train, ship or plane, these connections are a critical to sustaining and expanding our community’s ties to the world.

Invite a Port speaker to your organization’s next meeting to learn more about how our daily lives are affected by the Port’s activities.

For scheduling purposes, we ask that you please submit your request no later than one month prior to the date of your meeting.

Some examples of possible topics include:

  • Port 101: A presentation providing an overview of the Port, from its rich history to its current operations and plans for the future.
  • The Port at Work: Learn about the top commodities shipped through Portland’s marine terminals and how they come from - and get to - destinations around the world.
  • Portland International Airport: Gain a greater understanding of all that goes into running this award-winning airport, from ground operations, to wildlife management, to noise management and planning for future growth.
  • Environmental Stewardship: The Port of Portland shares the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship and strives to be a national leader among ports in environmental policy. Learn about the many award-winning environmental programs the Port has established and efforts to limit or offset future impacts.
  • Regional Transportation Logistics: Airports and seaports would not exist without a functional infrastructure of roads and rail. Learn more about how the Port promotes and helps fund transportation improvement projects in the region to connect the dots from here to there.
  • Where in the World: This exciting educational program, based on common core standards, is designed for third, fourth and fifth-grade students. Lessons and activities teach students about the significance of international trade and the role the Port plays in shipping products to and from the region. Students learn about their own connections with imports and exports - from the clothes on their backs to the jobs in their community. Content is adjusted to suit the students’ grade level and curriculum. A Port representative will come to your classroom to teach the lesson, generally requiring about one hour.

Commenting at Commission Meetings

The Port of Portland Commission is a public body and recognizes the value of citizen involvement. We welcome public input and comments at our meetings. Comments on agenda topics or other issues can be submitted in writing or verbally at monthly meetings.

The Port Commission usually meets the second Wednesday of every month, from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 11:00 a.m., in the Commission Boardroom of the Port of Portland Building, 7200 N.E. Airport Way. Occasionally, the time and place of a Commission meeting is changed, so please check the meeting agenda on the Port’s website to be sure of location and time. Agendas are posted the Friday before each Commission meeting.

Commission Agendas

At Port Commission meetings, public comment may be heard by the Commission on each agenda or public discussion item, at a time specified by the presiding officer of the Commission. Due to time constraints, the presiding officer may also limit the time allotted for each speaker. Some Commission items are regularly scheduled for public hearing and comment. People who wish to comment at a Commission meeting may sign up at the beginning of the meeting.

Tips for commenting to the Port Commission:

  • Arrive early to sign up to speak.
  • Include your name and address for the record and what item your commentary addresses.
  • When speaking, indicate if you are representing yourself or an organization and give a brief description of your interest.
  • Be as concise as possible and state why you support or oppose an agenda item. Describe what you suggest as a solution and let the Commission know what action you recommend.
  • Opinions supported by facts are the most persuasive.
  • Act respectfully and speak directly, keeping your comments to the content and reason of your message.
  • If various members of a group are commenting, group members may want to consider covering different topics, so commentary is not repetitious. Group members may also elect to say they support the previous comments or select a single speaker to represent the group.
  • Remember that Port Commissioners are interested in your comments.

As part of its community engagement efforts, the Port maintains a limited sponsorship fund. The fund sponsors programs, events and projects by organizations that align with the Port’s mission and help promote the maritime, shipping, aviation, commercial or industrial interests of the Port.
